This coming Winter season (2004-05) CYA will offer a house recreational program for players from 1st through 12th grade and participate in the Fairfax County Travel/Select program (generally for players in 4th to 8th grade). Due to multiple school renovations that have reduced our gym allocation, the Prep Program offered in previous years will be suspended for 2004-05. Games for Travel/Select and House begin in December and run through mid-March; practice for the Travel/Select program begins in October; House practices begin in December.

Online registration begins Sept. 7th (accessed through the main CYA web page). In addition, there will be a walk-in registration at Chantilly HS (cafeteria) from 11-2 on 9/11 and 9/18. For those who register during the Early Registration period (9/7 to 10/15) there will be a $20 discount. All those registering from October 16th-31st will pay full price. After November 1st, registrations will be accepted only if space permits in a player's grade; all others will be placed on a waiting list.  IMPORTANT: The registration deadline for Travel basketball is October 2nd in order for CYA to conduct tryouts and select the teams the first two weeks of October.

Registration fees are $125.50 ($105.50 if before 10/16) for grades 2-12 and $100.50 ($80.50 if before 10/16) for 1st grade. Note that $5.50 of this fee will be paid to Fairfax County as a result of the new county user fee. In addition, all those selected to a Travel team will pay an additional $25 after the teams are announced--this will pay for the gym use for Fall practices and, if available, for some extra rented space in the Winter.

HOUSE RECREATIONAL PROGRAM

The 1st grade program is strictly instructional, emphasizing skill development and basic understanding of the game. In 2nd grade, players are given the opportunity to test their skills in games that continue to focus more on instruction than competition. The 3rd through 12th grade house leagues are progressively competitive leagues, though with a great deal of emphasis placed on continuing skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. House teams for all grades play at Chantilly area gyms, with the exception of high school girls. Since the high school girls participate in a Friendship League with neighboring programs, they will play some games at gyms in Vienna, Fairfax, Burke and Annandale. Skills assessments (to assist in the player drafts) for Grades 3-8 are generally held in early to mid-November. For Grades 9-12, skills assessessments are held in late November, after the local high schools hold their tryouts). Players in Grades 1-2 do not hold skills assessments but are assigned to teams based on schools and neighborhoods.

COUNTY TRAVEL/SELECT TEAMS (FCYBL)

CYA offers those players with a higher skill level an opportunity to participate in the county-wide Fairfax County Youth Basketball League (commonly known as Travel or Select). Travel coaches are re-selected each year in August through an interview procress. During tryouts held in early October, the coaches select 10-11 players per team from among all those who sign up at registration for Travel. The number of teams per age group is determined by the talent available at tryouts (with a maximum of 3 teams per age group). Practice begins as soon as the teams are selected. This program requires a greater time commitment from participants for practice (2-3 hours per week) and games (1-2 per week); most games are played at gyms across Fairfax County (often outside the Chantilly area) and in Falls Church, Arlington, or Alexandria. Programs are offered at the ages of 10 and under, 11 and under, 12 and under, 13 and under (Boys only), 14 and under (Girls only), 15 and under (Boys), and 18 and under (Boys). The placement of players is generally determined by their age as of 1 October, with two grade exceptions allowed per team. In addition, all CYA players must reside in Fairfax County and are generally limited to our allocated zip codes (22033, 20151, 20171, 22124, and 20120), with 2 zip code exceptions allowed per team.

NOTE: Tryouts for the U15 and U18 Boys teams are held in late November after the local high schools hold their tryouts.

FIRST GRADE INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAM

CYA Basketball offers a program for first graders that is strictly instructional. This means that each week the coaches work on different skills (shooting, passing, ball handling, rebounding, teamwork, etc.). Only one exhibition game is played, in mid-March. Generally first grade instructional sessions are held once a week for one hour between the hours of 5:00 and 7:00 PM Monday to Friday.  The first grade sessions are held in local elementary school gyms (for example, Lees Corner or Navy).

First grade teams (usually 10 players) are formed by the league administrator based on school and neighborhood in mid-November. First grade instructional sessions start in mid-December and run through early March.
